Tutorial: How to showcase vehicles in interactive 360° VR

The automotive industry has been a leader in using interactive 360° VR content to help prospective buyers get a better sense of what it’s like to own a given vehicle. Brands like Ford, Toyota, and Infiniti have all used OmniVirt to market their vehicles and brands (see more here).

This tutorial provides best practices and instructions for showcasing travel destinations in 360°. We break it down into best practices and talk about how to take advantage of interactivity, as well as providing a more tactical how-to on OmniVirt’s platform.

1. Capture footage

Best practices for capturing 360° VR footage of vehicles:

  • To capture a vehicle’s interior: Consider camera placement to help bring in the right point of view. You can capture a 360 view of the interior from the driver’s seat to mimic how a potential customer might sit in the driver’s seat at the dealership. You can also capture a 360 view of the interior from the middle of the interior (think right in front of the back middle seat of a 2 row vehicle). This will allow a potential customer to view all seats of the vehicle and get a central view of the vehicle’s entertainment center and controls (see Jaguar example below).
  • To make the vehicle come alive: Make use of 360 video in addition to photo. Consider filming the vehicle on a test drive (see Honda example below). Include footage of the vehicle turning on to give potential customers a feel of the full experience of turning on and operating the vehicle. Some 360 videos have filmed friendly salesmen in the vehicle to help provide more information if the vehicle during a test drive, just as at the dealership.
  • Move from product showcase to branded experience: Another option is to capture footage that captures the spirit of the automotive brand versus a functional product showcase. For example, if the given vehicle is an SUV that can go off-roading, illustrate the adventures made possible by the vehicle (audiences will viscerally live those adventures in 360°!).

2. Upload Content

Upload content using your OmniVirt dashboard.

  • Log in to OmniVirt and select Upload

  • Upload your 360° file and select Publish

3. Build in Interactivity

Link content together using interactive hotspots.

  • Select My Content on your dashboard
  • On the Get Code page, select Edit Video and Hotspots

  • Add in hotspots and press publish

Best practices for showcasing vehicles with hotspots:

  • Place hotspots on common vehicle features that customers ask questions about, like the entertainment system
  • Consider linking hotspots to Presentation Cards to provide more information of a given vehicle feature and present customization options can provide users with more information (and a link to learn even more outside of the 360° experience)
  • Redirect to a URL works when your video’s content finishes (else you risk interrupting a user’s journey in discovering and exploring your content within the Player)

4. Embed and share your content

Embed on your website, app, or use your OmniVirt share link

  • Select My Content on your dashboard
  • Select Get Code to the right of your desired content

  • Embed to your website by copying and pasting the Web Code into your website editor
    • Or embed to your app by copying and pasting the iOS or Android Code into your code
    • Don’t want to embed? Just use your Link to Share and your audience can view directly onto OmniVirt’s website.
